Last month's Quest asked for the submission of "mellifluous" sounding names.  I offered my four favorites, Duard Farquhar, Tatiana Troyanos, Ingrid Dingfelder, and Amelita Galli-Curci.   Alma Litten  sent in 9 of her favorite names.  I put what I thought were the most mellifluous three first:

  1. Walter Von der Vogelweide  (poet)
  2. Amedo Modgliani  (artist)
  3. Michaelangelo Buonarroti  (artist)
  4. Rafael Sabatini  (novelist)
  5. Toulouse-Lautrec  (artist)
  6. Bertolt Brecht  (poet)
  7. Marc Chagall  (artist)
  8. Steven Vincent Benet  (poet)
  9. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce  (novelist)

In last month's answers I indicated that Alice B. Toklas was a pseudonym for Gertrude Stein.  Wayne Dodge  pointed out that Alice was actually a long time live in companion of Stein.  I found the pseudonym listing on a web site of pseudonyms.  The reason, I believe, is that Stein wrote her own memoirs under the title The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, hence using a pseudonym in that one publication.  Alice was of course noted for her cookbook with its famous recipe for Hashish Fudge.
