Quest  —  by  Dick Nuenke

November's Quest asked what twelve words had in common.  The answer is they all have at least two other homonyms (or homophones).  The clue that complacent doesn't quite make the list was to indicate the words have more than one homophone (complaisant is the only one for complacent).  The complete list follows:

  awful, aweful, offal
  bays, beys, baize
  chili, chilly, Chili
  does, doze, doughs
  guild, gild, gilled
  lays, leis, laze
  palate, pallet, palette
  peak, pique, peek
  roomy, roomie, rheumy
  sigh, psi, xi
  sighted, sited, cited
  toad, toed, towed

Alma Litten correctly solved this Quest.  A very complete list of homonyms is Alan Cooper's list of over 700 sets at www.cooper.com/alan/homonym.html .  He also discusses the difference between homonyms, homophones (such as these) and homographs.

[ Webperson's note:  The URL referenced above was a dead link when this column was prepared for the web.  If it isn't brought back to life, here, at least, is a list of homonyms from the same site:  www.cooper.com/alan/homonym_list.html . ]

The Quest for December consists of three lists, A, B, and C.  Within each list the six persons named have something in common.  Also all three lists have a certain common categorization, yet none of the names listed can properly be placed in one of the other two lists (I hope that makes some sense).

A B C
Tallulah Bankhead William Jennings Bryan Bob Barker
Hugo Black Clarence Darrow Carol Channing
Joe Louis Lillian Gish Bill Gates
Jim Nabors Robert Henri Jimi Hendrix
Jesse Owens Gloria Steinem Gypsy Rose Lee
Rosa Parks Ted Turner Robert Motherwell
