Quest  —  by  Dick Nuenke

The Quest for January 2001 I called Misleading Origins.  Seven items have different origins than the country or state listed.  The answers are:

French Fries Belgium
Kentucky rifle Pennsylvania
Panama hats Ecuador
Chinese checkers USA
German chocolate cake USA
Arabic numbers mostly from India
English horn Austria or France

Correct answers came from  Delmar BurkittSue Katoll,  and  Alma Litten

My source says Vienna is the source of the English Horn, possibly played first in France, but it could be the origin is France.  German chocolate cake originated in Dallas, Texas.  As Sue noted, the name derives from Samuel German's brand of chocolate used in the recipe.  The bittersweet chocolate was formulated in 1852;  the recipe appeared in a Dallas newspaper in 1957.  General Foods refined it with added coconut in 1958.
