Quest

by Dick Nuenke

Last month's Quest sought the identity of eight historical music groups from a listing of their members' names.  The answers are:

1. Diana, Mary, Florence, and Cindy  [The Supremes]
2. Keith, Greg, and Carl  [Emerson, Lake, and Palmer]
3. Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, and Mike  [The Beach Boys]
4. John, Paul, Pete, George, and Stewart (sic)  [The Beatles]
5. Barry, Robin, and Maurice  [The Bee Gees]
6. Bohnham, Plant, Page, and Jones  [Led Zeppelin]
7. David, Stephen, Graham, and Neil  [Crosby, Stills, Nash, and sometimes Young]
8. Jon, David, Alec, Richie, and Tico  [Bon Jovi]

It's clear why these groups fall under the general category of popular music; no less than a record nine persons submitted correct answers, accompanied by such comments as "a fun stroll down memory lane", "finally a quiz I know something about", and (obviously from Bob Fritz) "did you really think you would stump me with this?".  There were a number of comments made about the Beatles (originally the Silver Beatles), so some details are in order.  The full names were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Pete Best (dismissed in August 1962 and replaced by Ringo Starr), George Harrison, and Stuart Sutcliffe (not "Stewart", as I had it).  Stuart left the band in 1961 and died of a brain hemorrhage the following April.

Correct answers came from Bob FritzDavid HalseyAlma LittenNorman JamesSue KatollJulia MinturnMelissa ShirleyKevin Skehan,  and  Jeff Wolfe.  That beats the number of cryptogram replies.
