Quest

by Dick Nuenke

Last month's Quest was inspired by a Karl Haas program and listed five musical works and their composers.  All were compositions which remained incomplete at the composer's death and were completed by someone else, listed in parentheses.  Schubert's "unfinished" symphony wouldn't qualify.  The composer left it at two movements well before his death and it was never extended by someone else.

1. Duke Ellington's Three Black Kings  (his son, Mercer Ellington)
2. Bach's Art of the Fugue  (numerous persons have offered completions of the final fugue)
3. Amadeus Mozart's Requiem Mass  (his student, Franz Sussmayer)
4. Modest Mussorgsky's Kovanchina  (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov)
5. Rimsky-Korsakov's Trio for Piano, Violin, and Cello  (his son-in-law, M. Shteynberg)

Jeff LambAlma Litten,  and  Melissa Shirley  all recognized that these were unfinished works, but only  Kevin Skehan  recognized that they were completed posthumously by someone else.
